classified as high desert grasslands with elevations of 3500' to 6000'. Several mountain ranges run
through the county with the highest peak at an elevation
of 9,796 which is in the Chiricahua Mountains.
Cochise County is at an ecological crossroad. The
habitats and species from the Sierra Madre (Mexico), the
Rocky Mountains, and the Chihuahuan and Sonoran deserts
all can be found here. The abrupt rise of the
Chiricahua and Huachuca mountains from the surrounding
grasslands create "sky islands" which harbor rare
species and communities of plants and animals.
Cochise County is rich in history,
natural wonders, birds and native vegetation. The
diversity of the people that live here is a diverse as
the flora and fauna. Agriculture, ranching,
mining, high tech, military (army) base, tourism and many other
jobs make up the economy of Cochise County. Sierra
Vista is the largest community.
